New Boardwalk At Okefenokee Park
Primary Content

A park in the Okefenokee Swamp is replacing portions of its boardwalk that burned in a fire years ago, but the new version is likely to appeal only to the most adventuresome tourist.
Okefenokee Swamp Park is a private tourist attraction on the swamp's edge near Waycross. A massive wildfire in 2007 roared into the park and took out 1,200 feet of the boardwalk that led to the park's observation tower.
The Florida Times-Union reports the park is replacing the burned boardwalk with a walkway just two boards wide. Park administrative assistant Melanie Hauner says it will be "a little challenging" for some visitors.
She says the federal government denied a claim by the park seeking money for boardwalk repairs.
