Brenau University officials say they're hoping developers will build housing, restaurants and shops near the Georgia Mountains Center in Gainesville, which the school will convert into classroom space.

Brenau President Ed Schrader this week outlined possible development plans for the area around the center.

Schrader said he hopes developers and businesses invest in the neighborhood to reap the benefits of an enrollment boost the university is projecting.

Brenau now enrolls 2,800 students, and school official project that it will grow to 5,000 by 2025. Many of the new students are expected to study at the new downtown facility.

City officials recently approved a deal that allows Brenau to operate the Georgia Mountains Center and convert much of the convention center into classrooms.
