The Savannah-Chatham school board is exploring the idea of privatizing services from nurses to custodians in an effort to cut costs.

The Savannah Morning News reports that finance director Rebecca McClain recently answered board questions about the possibility of hiring a private company to handle the services of school cafeteria staff, school nurses, custodians, campus police, advertising and payroll.

McClain said that as school nurses leave the system, officials are looking at the possibility of replacing them with lower-paid licensed practical nurses.

McClain said private companies may not be more efficient in every case. She said an outsourced payroll system could result in inaccurate and late payments.
