A new $10 million airport terminal project in Albany has cleared its final regulatory hurdle.

The project is part of a plan to overhaul the terminal area at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport.

The terminal will replace the current McAfee terminal -- named for a former Albany mayor who died in a plane crash in the late 1950's -- which has been the hub for passenger air travel since 1955.

The Albany Herald reported that city commissioners voted to award the contract to a Florida firm, Tampa-based Walbridge-Aldinger.

Authorities said Albany's current terminal is the oldest in continuous use in the state.
