This week the Board of Regents gave final approval for the demolition of Rutherford Hall at the University of Georgia. The 72 year old dormitory will be torn down in the spring.

UGA spokesperson Pete Konenkamp says University President Michael Adams supports the decision.

“He decided on this occasion that the engineers were probably right because of persistent seepage of water into the existing building. It was sinking into the ground at its foundation and required expensive de-humidifiers to be installed in every room. When utilities broke in the building it was very difficult to determine where they were buried so that they could be repaired.”

UGA plans to construct a 260 bed dormitory in its place. Rutherford was built with funding from the Public Works Administration.
