Georgia is facing a lawsuit for failing to provide voter registration forms to residents seeking public assistance, like food stamps and Medicaid.

The lawsuit was filed Monday by the Georgia State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Georgia People's Agenda. It names Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp and state Department of Human Resources Commissioner Clyde Reese.

The suit claims Georgia has been engaging in "widespread, ongoing noncompliance" with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. It argues the state has denied thousands of low-income Georgians the opportunity to vote.

Georgia public assistance offices received 21,762 voter registration applications in 2007-2008, a 79 percent drop since 1995-96.

A spokesman for Kemp said they had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment.
