A key lawmaker in the state Senate says he expects Sunday alcohol sales to be on the chamber's agenda by Wednesday.

That's when bills must have passed either the state House or Senate to remain alive during this year's legislative session.

Senate Republicans shot down Sunday sales in a private meeting last month, leading the measure's supporters to call and write, demanding a public vote.

Senate Rules Committee Chairman, Republican Don Balfour of Snellville, says he expects Senators will go on record.

“The feeling of the caucus is they are ready to get rid of this issue, either by voting for it or against it.”

And Sen. John Bulloch, R-Ochlocknee, says he believes he now has the votes for the bill to pass out of committee and win the approval of the full Senate.

The bill would let communities decide whether alcohol could be sold at grocery stores and other retailers on Sundays.

A similar bill has stalled in the House.

Sunday liquor sales got off to a fast start as newly-elected Gov. Nathan Deal signaled his support for the local option proposal. It faced little initial opposition, but stalled after Senate Republicans decided the issue lacked the support to move forward this session.
