Georgia Seniors and the doctors who treat them are making noise about possible cuts to Medicare. If Congress doesn’t act before the end of the year more older Goergians could lose their doctors.

Congress has been pushing off a permanent fix to Medicare funding by authorizing extension after extension. But the latest one is set to run out next month.

Meanwhile more and more Georgia physicians who care for the elderly refuse to take on new Medicare patients says Harry Strothers. He’s the president of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians. He says doctors just can’t afford to treat them.

“What will happen if they don’t fix it at the beginning of January, every Medicare patient’s payment from the government will go down 25 percent," he says. "And I don’t know anybody who can survive that kind of cut.”

Georgia’s AARP has joined Georgia Doctors in calling on congress to restore funding. A recent survey by AARP finds 82 percent of it’s Georgia members worry that their doctor could drop them.
