Both candidates for Liuetenant Governor yesterday criticized an 11th hour ethics complaint made against the incumbent Republican Casey Cagle.

Businessman and one-time GOP gubernatorial hopeful Roy Boyd Friday alleged Cagle had an affair with one of his staffers and paid her $200,000 in campaign funds.

In a debate hosted by the Atlanta Press Club, Cagle called the attack disturbing.

"It sure is hurtful It's hurtful for my wife who's sitting in the audience. It's hurtful for my three boys who sit there as well," Cagle said. "And there's no place for this kind of activity that's politically motivated with no evidence and no facts behind it."

Democrat Carol Porter denied her campaign had anything to do with the complaint, which offered no proof of the affair, rumored for years.

"I had no knowledge whatsoever," Porter said. "I have refused to talk on any of that stuff the entire campaign. I will not talk on it. And it's a dead subject."

The complaint overshadowed a final push for votes by the candidates running for the state's number-two job.

Cagle, Porter and Libertarian Dan Barber also addressed immigration laws and priorities for the budget.
