It was homecoming night at Centennial’s Fortress but the festivities took a bit of a hit after the Wolverines of West Forsyth took advantage of some early turnovers to lead 23-0 after the first quarter en route to a 43-7 victory. West Forsyth, playing it just its third season of varsity football and it first season in Class-AAAAA, up from AAA, earned its first Region 6-AAAAA win thanks to a powerful ground game. Colton Cloud scored a hat trick in the first quarter and the Wolverines defense posted a safety to dampen the Knights’ spirit. In the second quarter, the Wolverines went to the air for a nine-yard TD connection between AJ Erdely and Ethan Shirley to lead 30-0 at the half. The two connected again in the third quarter on a 46-yard scoring pitch-and-catch to snuff out any hopes of a Centennial comeback. Late in the third Tyler Lott scampered in from sixteen yards out to cap West Forsyth’s scoring at 43 points.
Centennial finally dented the scoreboard late in the fourth with senior Carlson Carty bulling in from one yard out for his fifth TD of the season. The Knights fall to 2-3 and 0-1 on the season. West Forsyth meanwhile is making everyone forget the loss to Etowah with yet another impressive victory. While the Wolverines likely won’t be ranked, the playoffs in the school’s first year of Region 6-AAAAA play is likely not out of the question. With region play getting underway tonight, the season has truly begun, and West Forsyth is ahead of the game.
