Rep. Jan Jones (R-Milton) said she introduced the bill at the request of the Georgia Department of Public Health.

"Infectious diseases do not respect county lines. It is important, statewide, that we have coordination with the Fulton County public health department," Jones said.

Opponents of the bill worry state oversight will lead to a reduction of public health services for Fulton County residents.

Jones said the Fulton County health department is the only one in Georgia without any state oversight.
