Georgia State University (GSU) has won the rights to redevelop Turner Field.

The announcement came Monday from the City of Atlanta and Fulton County Recreation Authority (AFCRA), which owns and manages the stadium site.

It took AFCRA just over a month to pick GSU from the applicant pool of three developers, two of them relative unknowns.

The school says it has plans to turn Turner Field into a football stadium and to bring housing and retail to the roughly 70 acre site.

Now, AFCRA says it will start working out the final details of the sale with GSU and that they hope the redevelopment will be finished within five years.

The Atlanta Braves will leave Turner Field for their new home in Cobb County by the start of the 2017 baseball season.
