U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg sentenced Brooks to one year in prison after hearing from prosecution witnesses and from several civil rights leaders.

Brooks pleaded guilty in April to one count of filing a false tax document and no contest to five counts of mail and wire fraud.

Federal prosecutors were seeking a two year prison sentence. Several civil rights leaders including C.T. Vivian and Andrew Young asked for leniency. Brooks' lawyers asked for no jail time.

Judge Totenberg also mandated 250 hours of community service and two years of probation.
