State officials are putting the brakes on $123 million dollars of road projects, due to uncertainty of federal funding.

The Georgia Department of Transportation was supposed to put those projects out to bid in December. But the federal government will cut off all infrastructure payments to states, unless Congress passes a stopgap spending bill by next Thursday.

GDOT Commissioner Russell McMurry says lawmakers haven't passed a long-term transportation bill in 10 years. He says temporary fixes are making it difficult to do long-term planning.

The delayed projects include $65 million of resurfacing and maintenance on Interstate 75. The full list is available here [PDF].

A congressional committee has approved a multi-year funding bill, but it needs to go through another panel before the full House can vote on it. "Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree the measure shouldn’t be teed up for House floor passage until the Ways and Means Committee comes up with its portion of the proposal, dictating how to pay for this long-term infrastructure investment," Politico reports.
