Seven of the eight victims of the recent Brunswick killings were laid to rest over the weekend. More than 200 people attended the funeral Saturday, held at Youngs Island Church in Eulonia.

The seven coffins included that of Guy Heinze Sr., the father of Guy Heinze Jr., who is now charged in the killings. Heinze Jr. was charged Friday night with eight counts of first-degree murder and another count of attempted murder.

Two weekends ago, police say Heinze-Jr was the one to call 911 and lead authorities to the gruesome scene at a Brunswick mobile home park. Heinze Jr. was originally arrested on other charges, including tampering with evidence. But soon after his release on bond, police obtained the arrest warrant on the murder charges Friday. Glynn County police chief Msatt Doering said at a Friday news conference “I can assure you that this person is responsible.”

But after the funeral Saturday, the 16-year-old brother of the suspect, Tyler Heinze, told reporters he doesn’t believe his brother could have committed the crimes.

“My dad and my uncle and my cousin...they were all fighters. They would not have let their family just get killed like that with no kind of resistance. Whoever done this is walking around right now and they’re busted up. They know who they are, and I just wish they were man enough not to let my brother sit here and take the fall for this.”

Tyler Heinze says he believes drugs may have motivated the murders, but says his brother is innocent and never would have harmed his own family.

The seven laid to rest Saturday: 22-year-old Chrissy Toler; Russell D. Toler Sr., 44; Michelle Toler, 15; Michael Toler, 19; Russell D. Toler Jr., 20; Guy Heinze Sr., 45; and Brenda Gail Falagan, 49.

The funeral for the eighth victim, 30-year-old Joseph L. West, will be held later this month.
