savannah shakes

Anna Chandler, Connect Savannah arts and entertainment editor, and Jim Reed, Psychotronic Film Society executive and artistic director and Savannah Morning News film scene columnist, offer up some ways to have fun in the Savannah area this weekend.

Anna’s picks:

-Follow the twists and turns of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic comedies with Savannah Shakes’s production of the Taming of the Shrew at Muse Arts Warehouse. The updated version of the play is set in post-World War II America and features GIs back from war and looking to settle down with the beautiful Bianca and her prickly older sister, Kate. Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m. and Sunday, 3 p.m.; $15 general admission, $10 student/senior/military.

-Downtown staple Hang Fire bar will celebrate its ninth birthday Friday with a four-band blowout. Sauna Heat, DUMB Doctors, Wet Socks and Forced Entry will all perform - followed by Savannah’s premiere drag show, The House of Gunt. The party is a special one for the bar, as it will be Hang Fire’s last at its current location - due to shut down soon. The owners are looking for a new spot. Friday, 8 p.m.; free.

Jim’s picks:

-If you prefer your weekend shaken, not stirred, check out the last two movies in the Lucas Theatre’s Summer of Bond series: Casino Royale and Skyfall. Both star Daniel Craig as the infamous super spy. They follow Bond just after he earns his license to kill and later, as he tries to reconcile his classic spy style with the new world of cyberterrorism - and, obviously, blows stuff up. Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m.; $9 general, $6 student/senior/military.

-For a different (and more kid-friendly) movie experience, head to Tybee Island’s Memorial Park for the latest in the island’s outdoor movie series. Kick back under the stars and enjoy Disney’s Big Hero 6, about the bond between an inflatable robot and his boy. Saturday, nightfall (about 8:30 p.m.; free.

-Celebrate the birthday of film legend Yul Brynner at the Sentient Bean on Sunday. Known for his starring roles in movies like The King and I, The Ten Commandments, The Magnificent Seven and WestWorld, Brynner would have been 95 this week. The Psychotronic Film Society will mark the occasion with a screening of a little-known Yul Brynner film - the title of which they’re keeping top secret. Sunday, 2 p.m.; $7.
