The Savannah-Chatham County school district has agreed to pay-out $4.2 million to settle a class-action lawsuit.

The money will be split among more than 200 school maintenance, lunchroom, transportation and warehouse workers in the district. They say they were not allowed to enroll in the state retirement system for educators. Any workers still employed in the district now will be able to sign up for the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia.

An attorney for the Savannah-Chatham County schools says despite the settlement, the district denies any wrongdoing.

The lawsuit was filed in 2004 by a school mechanic who says he was denied enrollment in the retirement system. Other workers joined him after a Chatham Superior Court judge ruled the lawsuit class-action.
