Gwinnett County Animal Shelter

Officials say a metro Atlanta animal shelter remains closed with preliminary tests indicating pneumonia is the cause of several dogs becoming ill.

Gwinnett County Animal Shelter officials say the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine found one dog tested positive for pneumonia. Shelter officials say 23 dogs have shown symptoms.

While the main shelter remains closed, a secondary shelter is planned to open soon. It's unclear when the main facility can re-open.

Staff members have begun treating the sick dogs and don't consider any of them to be in critical condition. Officials say they are grateful for donations from individuals, businesses, and veterinary offices throughout the region.
