APS Beverly Hall

Beverly Hall, the former superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools charged in a cheating scandal, has died.

Hall's attorney J. Tom Morgan confirmed her death Monday. They say she passed away in the morning. She was 68 years old.

Hall had been battling stage 4 breast cancer. She was diagnosed with the disease in 2004.

She was among more than 30 APS educators indicted in March 2013 in what prosecutors have called a broad conspiracy to cheat on state exams.

Hall was scheduled to be tried along with 12 other defendants in a case that began in 2014. But her trial was delayed because her oncologist said her cancer had spread to the rest of her body.

In a statement, her legal team said “Dr. Hall fought this disease with great courage and dignity.”

They said she was never concerned about the outcome of the cheating scandals trial “only that the process be fair.”

Hall faced charges including racketeering, making false statements and theft.

She retired from the district in 2011 and she long denied knowing about the cheating or ordering it.
