Christ Church Anglican

Years after relinquishing its claim to Georgia's "Mother Church," a Savannah congregation that split from Episcopal Church has found a new permanent home.

The Savannah Morning News reports Christ Church Anglican plans to move into its new sanctuary — a renovated century-old building that was originally a Presbyterian church — on Feb. 1.

The Anglican congregation has spent the last three years sharing space at Independent Presbyterian Church for Sunday services. Its last service was there Sunday.

Georgia's colonial founders established Christ Church in Savannah in 1733. The pastor and much of the congregation broke away from the Episcopal Church in a dispute over doctrine in 2007. A long legal battle followed until the breakaway congregation relinquished the church property to the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia in 2012.
