A settlement has been reached with the Albany Police Department in a suit filed by a man who said he was sent to jail by police who knew he was innocent.

WALB-TV reported Monday that Richard Hayes reached a $25,000 settlement with the department. Hayes' attorney, James Finkelstein, says he and his client are pleased with the outcome.

The station reports that Hayes was 17 when he was arrested on charges of gang participation and aggravated assault in September 2009. He was held in the Dougherty County jail for 16 months and charges against him were dropped in 2011.

Hayes initially asked for a jury trial and more than $2 million in general and punitive damages in the lawsuit.
