Members and supporters of The New Georgia Project are calling on the state to process voter registration applications in the next seven days.

The non-partisan organization formed last fall to register voters all over the state. But they say the state has not processed nearly half of the more than 80 thousand applications they've turned in.

Democratic Congressman John Lewis has called the delay a systemic attempt to block people from voting.

"Every human being, every human being--it doesn't matter whether you're black or white, Hispanic, Asian-American, or Native American, straight or gay-- (has) the right to vote,” said Lewis at an event to promote voter registration today.

A spokesperson for the Secretary of State's Office says elections officials across the state are working to process those applications.

An investigator from that office is looking into potential voter registration fraud after officials say about 30 applications from the New Georgia Project turned out to be forgeries.

The deadline to register to vote is today - Monday, October 6. Georgians can register online as long as they have a valid driver’s license or identification card issued by GA Department of Driver Services (DDS) with a signature on file with DDS.
