Three months after a warehouse fire at the Port of Savannah, investigators are still trying to determine the cause.

Mark Keller, a spokesman for Savannah Fire and Emergency Services, says investigators are working to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the blaze on February 8.

"They’re looking at all angles," he says. "Arson has not been ruled out, but it is not the singular focus of the investigation either."

Keller says the department and the state fire marshal are assisting the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. In an unusual step, Keller says the ATF is leading the investigation.

"Most of the time our fire investigations don’t involve state property like the ports, and they don’t involve interstate commerce, like was involved with the materials that were being stored at the warehouse," Keller says. "So it’s not common at all."

The fire at a Georgia Ports Authority ocean terminal destroyed about 1,800 tons of crude rubber and 100,000 square feet of warehouse space. The authority estimates damage to the warehouse at more than $8 million.
