Cities across the country are using billions of dollars in federal funding to make streets safer. But in some places, that’s accelerating conflict with local residents who don’t like the changes.

The number of pedestrians killed on U.S. roads declined by 4% in the first half of last year, according to preliminary estimates. But pedestrian fatality numbers are still far above their 2019 levels.

Although the study authors say the results can't be used to gauge drug use on the roads nationwide, the high number of drivers, passengers and others with drugs in their systems is concerning.
