President Biden named Kim Cheatle, a veteran Secret Service official, to be the agency's next director as it faces controversy over missing text messages around the time of the Jan. 6 insurrection.

With Republicans set to take control of the House of Representatives in November, the Democrat-led committee has a lot to pack into the next five months.

Reports that the Secret Service deleted text messages related to Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection have caught the attention of the chief records officer at the National Archives.

The Department of Homeland Security inspector general, which oversees the Secret Service, said the texts were deleted after his office asked for them.

The explosive testimony about former President Trump's actions on Jan. 6, 2021, has led to calls from some right-leaning outlets that Trump is unfit to serve in office.

They have been impersonating federal agents since early 2020, the FBI says. They allegedly offered favors to several Secret Service agents, including one assigned to the first lady's detail.

"Agents are already worrying about guns and knives and bombs," a former Secret Service agent says. "Now they have to worry about COVID-19."

The Secret Service intercepted the envelope containing the deadly toxin, law enforcement sources tell NPR. They say the poison did not make it to the White House grounds.
