Peruvians will elect their new president Sunday with polls suggesting a polarized but tight race between hard-right candidate Keiko Fujimori and leftist Roberto Sánchez.

Authorities confirmed on Sunday the official results of the first round of the presidential elections in early April, with Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez advancing to the runoff on June 7.

Voters will have to wait until at least Monday to learn the outcome of Sunday's presidential election after the process was mired with logistical issues that left thousands unable to cast ballots.

With 35 candidates in the race, Peru is set to elect its 9th president in less than a decade. Amid rising corruption and crime, voters are left asking: Can this election finally break the cycle?

The protests are against President Dina Boluarte and in support of predecessor Pedro Castillo, whose ouster last month cast the nation into political chaos. At least 53 people have died.
