GPB Morning Headlines for August 9, 2024

Communities in southeast Georgia's Bulloch County are picking up the pieces from Tropical Storm Debby, while also preparing for more possible flooding this weekend.

Environmental advocates and officials in the northwest Georgia town of Calhoun have reached an agreement on how to make residents’ drinking water safe from cancer causing PFAS, or so-called "forever chemicals." 

A new, one of a kind center for people experiencing mental health crises is open in South Fulton County. Paid for by federal American Rescue Plan Funds, officials are now asking for funding to open more centers like it.

At least 40,000 homes and businesses are without power in South Georgia as Tropical Storm Debby brings the area strong winds.

Still, the storm's greatest impacts are expected in coming days when it could dump 16 to 20 inches of rain, bringing historic flooding.

Savannah officials are especially concerned about Debby because the area's already saturated with above-average July rain totals.
