Former President Jimmy Carter will be honored today with a funeral in the nation’s capital and a service in Plains, Ga.; Bernice King, daughter of MLK, is remembering Carter as a man committed to her father's work fighting racism, poverty and war; and snow, sleet and ice are in the Friday forecast for all of northern and part of central Georgia.

GPB evening headlines for January 7, 2025

Jimmy Carter's state funeral has moved to Washington, D.C. after observances in Georgia.  His casket departed by jet this morning.

Forecasters say it's looking more likely that there'll be freezing rain and ice or snow at the end of this week in parts of north Georgia.

Environmental advocates and economic developers in southeast Georgia have struck a deal over water rights concerning Hyundai.

GPB evening headlines for January 6, 2025

Former President Jimmy Carter left his hometown of Plains for one last time on Saturday.  Mourners lined the route to Atlanta.

Maranatha Baptist Church held its first Sunday school lesson since Carter's death.  His niece asked for prayers for the family.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, thousands of people are paying their final respects to Carter as he lies in repose at the Carter Center.

The University of Georgia says a UGA student is among more than 30 people injured in what the FBI is calling an act of terrorism in New Orleans.

Georgia-based researchers with the U.S. Department of Agriculture are looking at ways that poultry can be better protected against common diseases, which can spread quickly and devastate flocks.
