The soon-to-be laws include a ban on transgender girls playing female sports. The multi-year effort by the Legislature affects athletes from elementary school to collegiate sports.
In vitro fertilization, or IVF, will now officially be protected by Georgia law following overwhelming bipartisan support.
Senate Bill 79, which imposes mandatory minimum sentences for trafficking in certain amounts of fentanyl, will also take effect.
In other criminal justice news, defendants will be able to claim attorneys fees in cases where the prosecuting attorney is disqualified and the case is dismissed. Another section of the law creates an easier process for wrongfully convicted Georgians to receive financial compensation.
An already-planned state income tax cut will accelerate this year, bringing the flat income tax rate to 5.19%, down from 5.39%.
Another financial law, requiring Georgians with disabilities to be paid minimum wage, will also take effect.
