Gov. Nathan Deal announced Wednesday that Norfolk Southern will be relocating its headquarters to Atlanta.

Deal was joined by Governor-elect Brian Kemp, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Norfolk Southern CEO James Squires.

Before the transportation company agreed to relocate from Virginia, Atlanta had to approve legislation to build up the 40-acre hole downtown known as the Gulch.

"Norfolk Southern made it very clear that the Gulch was a very important piece, that without that they would not likely relocate,” Bottoms said.

Norfolk Southern owns property in the Gulch that it plans to sell now that it's moving here. It would then put that money toward its new Midtown location.

Deal says he's glad the process worked out.

"We're just pleased that once these pieces fit together, that Norfolk southern followed through,” Deal said.

The move is expected to create 850 new jobs and see an investment of about $575 million dollars into the area.
