Fishers on a river shoal

This "What's In A Name" comes to us from listener Forest McMullin, who also asked us about Druid Hills.

McMullin was curious about a street in East Atlanta called Flat Shoals Road.

Flat Shoals Road begins as Flat Shoals Avenue in East Atlanta and becomes Flat Shoals Road as it moves farther east into DeKalb County, where it continues until Panthersville, becoming the Flat Shoals Parkway/GA 155 S.

Flat Shoals gets its name from the fact that the street runs over and between several creeks in the area.

One of these creeks is named "Shoal Creek."

"Shoal" refers to an area of shallow water that is usually caused by a submerged sandbank.

Because shoals are good places to cross a creek or river, especially when they are nice and flat, the roadway was naturally built over shoals, and gets its name from them, too.
