10,000 Contraband Items Found In Georgia Prisons This Year, Officials Say

The Georgia Department of Corrections released its first quarterly report of 2018 detailing contraband interdiction, which detailed nearly 10,000 confiscated items.
Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and handmade weapons topped the breakdown released by the GADOC on Tuesday.
So far this year, 9,829 contraband items were confiscated by GCD tactical squads and canine units in collaboration with the GDC Office of Professional Standards. Over the same period, 12,633 items were confiscated in 2017 and 7,825 items in 2016.
“It is shocking to know that almost 10,000 items of contraband made its way inside the walls of our facilities; however, I am extremely confident and proud of our officers and staff who work countless hours to find and remove these items,” Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier said. “We are steadfast in our ‘fight to be tough from within’ and will continue to hold those who break the law accountable for their actions.”
Confiscated tobacco decreased considerably from prior years (down to 47 kg from 78 kg in 2017 and 69 kg in 2016), while improvised weapons increased (up to 3,688 from 1,903 in 2017 and 1,648 in 2016).
