Journalist Mike Kelly and 'The Bus on Jaffa Road'
Primary Content
We’re doing something new on Two Way Street this week: broadcasting a conversation that I led in front of a live audience at the Atlanta Jewish Book Festival recently. The guest is Mike Kelly. He’s a columnist and reporter for the Bergen Record in New Jersey; and he’s written a book called “The Bus on Jaffa Road,” which takes a deep dive into lives of terrorists and victims that intersected when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest on the No. 18 bus in Jerusalem in February, 1996. Among the victims were two young Americans, Sara Ducker and Matthew Eisenfeld. Kelly interviewed relatives of Sara and Matt as well as the terrorist who built the bomb that killed them and the father of the suicide bomber himself. What he’s produced in the process is a compelling look behind the headlines at the human toll that heinous terrorist attacks take on all involved. Our conversation was recorded the weekend after the attacks in Paris, and although it pre-dated the San Bernardino attacks, our discussion is perhaps even more relevant in the aftermath of San Bernardino. The recording of the interview came about because C-SPAN took an interest in Mike’s book, and when they heard we were going to appear together at the Jewish Book Festival they asked if they could record the show for airing on Book TV. In return they gave GPB permission to broadcast the conversation on Two Way Street. Recording in front of a live audience was a great experience for me and for Mike, and I think audience members felt they were getting to participate in something a little more special knowing the discussion would be broadcast on TV and radio.
As 2016 gets underway, we’re making plans to record more shows in front of live audiences and in the next few weeks will be making an announcement about a venue for these shows. As we move forward with these occasional live conversations there will be opportunities for you to attend the sessions, which we’ll alert you to through our social media outlets and on the show as well. I hope you find today’s show revealing and interesting!
