Coastal Ga. Weekend: Savannah And Coastal Events Dec. 23-Jan. 1

Sara Lane of Visit Tybee and Clinton Edminster of Art Rise Savannah offer up some ways to have fun and celebrate the season this Christmas and New Year’s.

Clinton’s picks:

-Welcome a Savannah native musician back home at Quattlebaum’s Homecoming Concert Wednesday at Sulfur Studios. Singer/songwriter Austin Quattlebaum returns to his Savannah home after years spent traveling southern Appalachia and the Pacific Northwest, bringing his homegrown blues and folk with him. Wednesday, 7 p.m.; $10-15 suggested donation.

-Channel your Christmas spirit in a new direction with Candyland’s Christmas at HangFire. The show Christmas night will feature dance music from the likes of Lotion in the Basket and DJ Heart Eyes Emoji, plus entertainment from Raine Raine as Krampus and Lavender Mist as the Christmas tree. There’s a potluck beforehand as well. Dec. 25, potluck 7 p.m., party 10 p.m.

-Kick off 2016 with the artists of Savannah-based label Retro Futurist at the Jinx. Local garage rockers will headline the show, with The Nude Party out of Boone, NC and locals Grimsel opening. Jan. 1, 10 p.m.; $7.

Sara’s picks:

-Ring in the new year on Tybee with Rock House Original Bar’s Masquerade Ball. Finish the year on a high note by entering the contests for best costume and best masquerade mask, and be sure to take part in the karaoke while that mask’s still hiding your identity. Dec. 31, 9 p.m.

-While you’re on Tybee, don’t miss the New Year’s Eve fireworks at the pier. The light show will launch at the stroke of midnight. Watch from the beach, or from wherever you’re celebrating locally.

-Get a refreshing start to the New Year by diving into the Atlantic Ocean at the annual Tybee Island Polar Plunge. Dress up in your silliest outfit for the Gang of Goofs parade and costume contest, then take a dip in the (potentially) chilly January ocean. Be sure to warm up afterward with hot cocoa at the Marine Science Center. Jan. 1, costume contest 11 a.m., plunge 12 p.m.; $25 adults, free kids 12 and under.
