A transgender inmate who sued the state has been released from prison.

Ashley Diamond took the Department of Corrections to court, after she was denied hormone treatment. She also says she was housed with male inmates and was sexually assaulted eight times.

The state allowed her continue hormone therapy, but Diamond says the dosage was inadequate and the assaults continued.

Diamond was serving an 11 year sentence for theft, obstruction and escape.

Diamond was eligible for parole later this year, but the Southern Poverty Law Center says she was released to her family Monday. A spokesman for the Board of Pardons and Paroles tells the New York Times she will remain under parole supervision for the rest of her sentence.

An SPLC attorney says it will continue to pursue its case against the state.

GPB's On Second Thought talked about Diamond's case in March. Listen to the conversation here.
