The National Parks Service wants to focus attention on the historically significant events that happened after the Civil War - specifically during Reconstruction. So this year, it’s conducting a study hoping to identify nationally significant sites that the Parks Service can help to preserve and protect. Turkiya Lowe with NPS says told GPB’s Emily Jones that the study came out of researching the Civil War.

The study of Reconstruction-era sites continues until next summer. Then, Lowe says NPS will encourage people to seek national landmark status for eligible sites.
