Life's A Beach / Telfair Museums

Savannah Tribune Vice President and Advertising Director Tanya Milton and Savannah MagazineAssociate Editor Amy Condon offer up some ways to enjoy a great weekend in the Savannah area.

Tanya’s picks:

-Take in the sounds of 1960s southern soul performed by the greats of today at the Lucas Theatre’s latest onstage cabaret Thursday night. Trae Gurley, Cecilia Arango and Eric Jones will perform classic hits by the likes of Ray Charles and Otis Redding. As always in this series, the audience will sit on stage with the performers. Thursday, 8-10 p.m.; $25.

-Enjoy the beach without the heat at the Jepson Center’s Free Family Day on Saturday, highlighting the “Life’s a Beach” exhibit. Check out Martin Parr’s shots of life at the beach and get into the spirit of things with crafts and workshops, including decorate-your-own flip flops and kites. Saturday, 1-4 p.m.; free.

Amy’s picks:

-Break out your Doc Martens and plaid for Lights, Camera, Art: ‘90s Night at the Jepson Center. Tour the Jepson’s current exhibit of 90s art, rock out to vintage tunes, and take in a classic Winona Ryder-Ethan Hawke film (you know the one). And don’t worry if you tossed out your flannel once Pearl Jam got all sentimental; they’ll have a grunge station, complete with makeup artist, to get you looking your 1990 best.

-Lose yourself in the fairy world with Savannah Stage Company’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ampersand. Shakespeare’s beloved comedy follows the misadventures that ensue when when a group of four young lovers cross paths with the feuding king and queen of the fairies, unleashing a cascade of mischief and mistaken identity. Fridays and Saturdays through July 25, 8 p.m.; $15 or pay what you can.

-Sample some delicious eats (and drinks) while enjoying great music at the second Stopover in the Yard show, a collaboration between the Grey and MusicFile Productions. Tickets include food with the Grey’s signature southern; your choice of beer, wine or Chatham Artillery Punch and live music by Thomas Wynn and the Believers, all on the restaurant’s outdoor patio. Saturday, 12-3 p.m.; $21 all-inclusive, $11 music only.
