Georgia transportation officials say crews will clear drains along the interstate that runs through the heart of Atlanta before and after storms this week.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports drainage systems on the Downtown Connector were overwhelmed by debris washed into the drains by a strong storm Sunday. That caused the drains to clog and the roadway to flood.

The flooding closed I-75/I-85 for about 45 minutes.

Workers who cleared the drains said they found debris including yard signs, leaves and small tree limbs.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Natalie Dale said crews had last cleared the drains on Thursday. She said the crews usually clear the drains about once a week but she said they plan to increase rounds before and after big storms.
