The woman credited for leading the charge to create the city of Sandy Springs has died. Eva Galambos, the first mayor of the city, passed away Sunday after a battle with cancer. She was 87.

The push to incorporate the city of Sandy Springs began in 1966, in response to an effort to annex the land into the City of Atlanta. In 1976, Galambos began leading the fight for residents to form their own government.

In June 2005, 94 percent of residents voted to incorporate the first new city in Georgia in 50 years. Galambos was elected Sandy Springs' first mayor, serving until 2013.
