The University of Georgia is preparing to host an event focused on fighting hunger and reducing food waste.

The Campus Kitchens Project and the Food Recovery Network are scheduled to hold a summit at UGA April 18 and 19 at the Zell B. Miller Learning Center.

Organizers say the event features students and experts from public health, nonprofit management, social justice and other fields discussing the relationship between food shortages and food waste.

Officials say a network of 43 Campus Kitchen Project groups across the country collected more than 823,500 pounds of surplus food from campus dining halls, community gardens and grocery stores last year. Organizers say the groups made the surplus, unsold food into meals for more than 12,000 clients.
