A new analysis of the economy of Georgia’s southern coast finds the region is still struggling, even as other areas emerge from many of the effects of the recession.

Don Mathews an economist at the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick says the economy was hit hard by the recession and continues to decline despite recoveries in the state economy and national economy overall.

He says one of the reasons why the region is struggling is because it is largely rural and relies heavily on mostly low-paying jobs in the tourism industry.

Matthews' report reviewed the Brunswick area primarily. He says the area can't compete with Savannah and Jacksonville.
