DeKalb County officials say they're launching a private social network that will also serve as an online neighborhood watch group.

County police are partnering with Nextdoor, a free program that provides neighborhood-based social networks that are only accessible to verified residents of each neighborhood.

Officials say the networks will allow users to share information about neighborhood watch and safety, and share details on upcoming events, lost pets and more.

Police Chief Cedric Alexander said in a statement that the county's partnership with Nextdoor will also allow the police department to communicate directly online with neighborhood residents. Alexander says he expects the partnership to support public safety efforts in the county.
