Advocates for the Ocmulgee National Monument in East Macon have a big deadline coming up.

Friday is the last day for the public to offer their thoughts on the Ocmulgee Old Fields Boundary Study.

The study is the first big step toward massively expanding the monument into Georgia’s first full-fledged national park, said Macon attorney Brian Adams, president of the non-profit Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative.

"The monument is only around 700 acres. The current boundary expansion would be a little over 2,000 acres. But our park and preserve concept would be as big as 50,000 acres," Adams said.

While the pending boundary study produced by Ocmulgee National Monument Superintendent Jim David is more modest than the national park goal, Adams said his organization fully supports it.

He’s urging people to leave positive feedback on the National Parks Service website.

"The more positive comments the Parks Service sees, the more they realize and appreciate that the community is behind this effort,” Adams said.

“So click yes, this is positive, we want 'Alternative B' or 'Alternative 2' which is the expansion alternative that they have proposed."
