Much of north Georgia was under a flood watch as forecasters warned of the potential for freezing rain and some snow later in the week.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City said rain is expected to mix with and change over to snow or a snow/sleet mix across parts of north Georgia Thursday afternoon and evening.

Forecasters said there was the potential for light snow accumulations across parts of the north Georgia mountains Thursday.

The weather service said light snow could fall as far south as northern parts of the Atlanta metro area, but no accumulation is expected outside of the higher elevations in the mountains.

The flood watch, in effect through Thursday night, covered more than a dozen counties and included Atlanta, Blairsville, Cartersville, Gainesville, Lawrenceville and Marietta.
