Police in middle Georgia are getting crime-fighting help from technology and man’s best friend wearing a new K-9 camera in Warner Robins.

The Warner Robins Police Department is one of just eight departments in the country that has the back-mounted video camera system. It includes an $8,000 dollar piece of equipment paid for by a grant.

A German Shepherd named Ego will wear the video camera like a backpack, while the dog’s handler will wear a mobile viewing screen like a watch attached to their wrist.

The Department’s Tabitha Pugh says this will help officers stay safe.

“Many times when an officer’s clearing a building, or if we have a situation where we have a barricaded subject, sometimes the canine is sent in before the officers.”

The camera can record in low light and includes a built-in D-V-R that records audio and video.
