Schools across Georgia will begin teaching new academic standards designed to ensure students are ready for college and careers after high school graduation.

Georgia adopted the "Common Core" standards in July 2010. State officials earmarked $900,000 in grant money for training.

Experts say the major challenge for teachers switching to "Common Core" is learning how to teach concepts that used to be taught in higher grades to younger students. So far, 46 states have adopted the changes to math and English language arts.

Starting in the 2014-2015 academic year, a new national test is scheduled to be introduced to measure how well students are learning the "Common Core." For now, students in Georgia will still be taking the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests.
