The University System Board of Regents on Monday named Dr. Brooks Keel the next president of Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

Keel is currently vice chancellor for research and economic development and a biology professor at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Keel will replace Dr. Bruce Grube, who has served as Georgia Southern’s president since 1999. The transition will take place on January first.

Speaking of Keel in a prepared statement, university system chancellor Erroll Davis praised his credentials and experience.

"He brings tremendous academic credentials, understands our state challenges on all dimensions and has the experience to link industry and the academy together in creative and compelling ways," said Davis. "I have no doubt that he will be a great partner for the board while leading Georgia Southern to the next level."

Keel visited Statesboro in September. At the time, Keel said one of his goals would be to give every undergraduate student an opportunity for a research, creative or service learning experience.

"Georgia Southern has something unique because of its culture of a student-centered approach," Keel said. "No great university can be successful without having the support of the community."
