Caregiving Spotlight: The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers
Primary Content
The Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers (RCI) carries on the mission of late founder, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, to ensure family caregivers are seen, heard, and supported. Since 1987, RCI has consistently developed programs that are shaped by caregiver experiences and backed by research and evidence. Through research, resources, training and tools, policy, and advocacy, they are committed to change that sustainably improves the health and strength of caregivers.
The Rosalynn Carter Institute advances collaborative solutions that achieve sustained impact and transformational systems change through four core strategies: conducting research, focusing caregiver insights, convening cross-sector leaders, and developing scalable solutions.
RCI’s impact over the years has shown that we can improve the confidence in caregiving, decrease loneliness, and inspire opportunities for caregivers of all ages, cultures, experiences and genders.
The inclusion of both qualitative and quantitative data collected and analyzed by RCI grows the collective understanding of family caregiver characteristics and shed light on their unique needs. In partnership with Duke University, RCI’s Caregiver Profiles© organize the complexity of caregiving experiences into 10 caregiver-centric profiles. This work has helped influence how caregivers are recognized and supported by systems they encounter every day.
RCI is deeply committed to supporting caregivers of all ages, with a special emphasis on building a pipeline of empathy and leadership be engaging youth. They continue the legacy of integrating caregiver experiences with academic and professional advancement through the John and Betty Pope Caregiver Scholarship. Students at Georgia Southwestern State College are among the first to receive provisions that allow them to balance education while fulfilling caregiving responsibilities.
The Emergency Preparedness Initiative works with government agencies to ensure family caregivers are prepared, afforded resources, and properly assisted in the face of natural disasters. A few of these resources include a 24/7 crisis counseling hotline, disaster preparedness guidebooks, and mental wellbeing courses in partnership with Sharecare.
Serving the 105 million family caregivers in the United States, the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers creates an environment where every caregiver feels seen, heard and supported.
