A retired Liberty County Sheriff’s Office drug dog got dropped off at the local animal shelter last week. The female Dutch Shepherd quickly got adopted and is living in a good home. What should have been a good news story however has become one of the more wild Coastal Georgia primary election issues of 2024 and the focus of online misinformation during a hotly contested race for Liberty County sheriff.
As part of the The Current‘s ongoing election coverage and candidate interviews, reporter Jake Shore and photojournalist Justin Taylor paid a visit to Camden County Sheriff Jim Proctor at the Woodbine office and detention center for an interview. While he won’t be on the main ballot on May 21, his challengers have put his spending and jail record foremost in their messages.
The Georgia Supreme Court issued a ruling in the four-year legal case against former Glynn County Police Chief John Powell, reversing a decision by a trial judge and setting the stage for Powell’s criminal charges to be dismissed.
