Lawmakers in the State Senate are considering regional sales taxes to pay for transportation projects. Most regions of the state including metro Atlanta, voted against TSPLOSTs in 2012.

But the Senate Transportation Committee Wednesday approved legislation that would allow those regions to hold another vote. The counties would have until January 2017 to schedule a new referendum.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, smaller groups of counties could also band together to levy transportation sales taxes. Meanwhile, the full Senate will likely vote Friday on its own version of a comprehensive transportation funding bill. That bill is separate from the proposed TSPLOST bill.
